Here on the farm we grow Haskap Berries, they are a delicious berry which is native to northern climates. They are extremely cold hardy which makes them a great choice for growing in Ontario. Not only are they incredibly delicious but they are also packed full of antioxidants, being considered a superfood with up to three times the antioxidants of blueberries.
Haskaps are one of the first berries to fruit in the spring, usually ready for picking by the first week in July and can be as early as middle of June, depending on the weather.
They look like an elongated blueberry but they have a flavour all their own, with a blend of both sweet and tart tones. They are great just on their own, but can also be used in smoothies, sauces, jams, coulis, wine and many other things.
Not only are our berries extremely popular with our customers, but the birds love them too, and will happily devour every berry from our 300 plants. To discourage them we are forced to cover the entire area with netting, as shown in the picture at the top of this page. We do like to share though, even if the birds don't, and we leave some berries on the plants so the birds can enjoy them once we remove the netting.
Our berries are hand picked, and placed immediately into a cooler in the field. They are then transferred to a fridge to remove all the field heat before being frozen.
Fresh haskaps are available during the picking season, contact us to order fresh berries or to arrange pickup of frozen haskaps which are available year around.
